Members of the Tehran City Council elected Alireza Zakani as the mayor of the capital with 18 out of 21 votes on Sunday.
The council had earlier said Zakani was unofficially elected as mayor, beating the other two final candidates Mohsen Pirhadi and Maziar Hosseini, and would be put up for official vote on Sunday
Based on law, he will assume the position after gaining a final approval from the Interior Ministry.
Zakani, 56, is a fundamentalist who currently heads the parliament’s research center.
He has served as lawmaker in several rounds of the Majlis and headed the special parliamentary commission for reviewing Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers.
He stood as presidential candidate in the June 14 elections, but withdrew in favor of Ebrahim Raeisi who later won the majority of votes.
Earlier on Thursday, Tehran city councilors had elected Mehdi Chamran, the only candidate, as head of the council with 21 votes.
