The new ambassador to the United Nations met with President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday before leaving Tehran for New York to start his mission, IRNA reported.

Rouhani described efforts to deal with “illegal” and “unfair” sanctions and promote “peace” and “understanding” in the world as the Islamic Republic’s top foreign policy priorities and underlined the need for expansion of “constructive interaction” with the world and increased international cooperation to combat “extremism” and “violence”.

Gholamali Khoshrou, who formerly served as deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs and ambassador to the UN and Switzerland, was appointed late last month as new envoy to the world body. The US had last year refused the previous appointee for the post, Hamid Aboutalebi, a visa to work at Iran’s UN mission.
