China Urges US to Rejoin JCPOA

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday urged the United States to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program and lift “illegal” and “unilateral” sanctions on Iran.
Wang spoke at the annual World Peace Forum organized by Tsinghua University and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, AP reported.
The comments come amid ongoing talks in Vienna, in which the six countries that remain parties to the agreement, namely France, Britain, Germany, China, Russia and Iran, have not yet managed to work out a clear resolution on outstanding issues on how the United States can rejoin the land mark deal.
Former US president Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement in 2018, but President Joe Biden repudiated his predecessor and said the US wants to return to the pact. However, he has not adopted any effective measures to help resuscitate the faltering agreement.
The 2015 accord is aimed at ensuring the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear activities through imposition of time-bound restrictions on its program in return for financial dividends which never materialized.
“The US should correct its mistakes” Wang said. “It should fully and completely remove all its illegal and unilateral sanctions on Iran and any third party, to meet Iran halfway and make further breakthroughs in the negotiation.”
On the US withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan, Wang said the US should ensure “a smooth military transition in a responsible manner” and prevent chaos or war during its withdrawal.
Biden has said that America did what it came to Afghanistan to do—hunt down and punish the al-Qaeda terrorist network that carried out the 9/11 attacks.
After nearly 20 years, Biden said it was time to end America’s “forever war”.
Afghans, however, say international forces are leaving a country deeply impoverished, on the brink of another civil war, and with worsening lawlessness that terrifies some more than the advancing Taliban.
