Iran’s first homegrown Covid-19 vaccine, dubbed COV-Iran Barekat, is safe and effective against the infectious disease, the team behind the vaccine’s production said on Sunday.
“Barekat was developed based on international standards…We hope it becomes available to the public as soon as possible,” supervisor for Barekat’s clinical trials, Minou Mohrez, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Barekat is currently undergoing phase three of human trials. Half of volunteers for phase three, some 10,000 people, have received the first shot of the vaccine.
“We’re requesting that the Health Ministry issue an emergency use authorization for Barekat,” Mohrez said, noting that emergency use of Covid-19 vaccines has become common practice worldwide since the contagion broke out.
Head of the research team behind the vaccine, Hassan Jalili, announced that one million shots of the vaccine have been manufactured before phase three concludes.
“Output capacity will reach three million this month and the capacity will further increase in July when production lines are fully set up,” Jalili said.
Four other homegrown vaccines have obtained regulatory approval to conduct clinical trials. Barekat and Pasteur Institute of Iran’s jointly produced vaccine with Cuba are expected to hit the market sooner than the rest of the vaccines.
