The Health Ministry announced on Wednesday that all people over the age of 18 will be vaccinated against the coronavirus by the end of autumn (December).
Pointing out that 621,000 vaccine doses have been administered so far, the ministry’s spokeswoman, Sima Sadat Lari, said their projections show Iran’s adult population will gain immunity against the disease before 2022, IRNA reported.
Iran is ramping up its inoculation program, as more vaccine shipments arrive. Russia’s sixth batch of Sputnik V will be sent to Tehran on Thursday and a second homegrown vaccine is set to launch the third and final phase of human trials in the coming days.
Reza Mazaheri, the head of clinical trials, said COV Iran Barkat will be tested on 20,000 people from six cities, namely Tehran, Karaj, Mashhad, Bushehr, Isfahan and Shiraz.
Mazaheri called on the public to volunteer for the trials, as his team can determine the safety and efficacy of the vaccine two months after the start of the trial.
The Health Ministry registered 24,800 newly-identified infections on Wednesday, pushing the national tally past 2.3 million.
Some 390 patients lost their lives to the disease on the same day, bringing the total death toll to 67,913, the ministry said.
