Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei expressed his deep condolences on the death of top general Mohammad Hejazi who passed away at the age of 65 on Sunday, as a result of the effects of chemical weapons used in the 1980-88 Iraq-imposed war.
The Leader described him as a person completely devoted to Islam and the revolution who led “a life full of tireless efforts”, had a “creative mind” and “a heart full of sincere faith and strong motivation”, Leader.ir reported.
“He has served in important and influential positions in IRGC and has been successful in all of them,” he said, adding that his loss is “truly a source of regret and sorrow”.
Hejazi was the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ Quds Force at the time of his passing and had earlier served as the head of Basij volunteer force for 10 years.
He was also a veteran of the eight-year war where he came under the chemical attack and had been suffering from its effects ever since.
A medical commission at Baqiyatallah Hospital where he was treated identified the cause of his death as the lingering effects of that chemical attack.
