Iran registered 258 new deaths caused by Covid-19 on Sunday, its biggest one-day raise since December, as the country grapples with the fourth of Covid-19 pandemic in the aftermath of the Iranian New Year holidays.
The nearly 70% surge, compared to a day earlier, has taken the national death toll to 64,490, spokeswoman of Health Ministry, Sima Sadat Lari, was quoted as saying by ISNA.
Over 21,000 were confirmed on Sunday to have contracted the infectious disease, pushing the total case tally to 2.07 million, she added.
Overnight fatalities in the capital of Tehran has gone past 70, according to Tehran City Council member, Mohsen Hashemi, who said mass vaccination is the only way to stem the spread of the infection. 
On average, some 720 Iranians are infected with the virus and seven to eight die from it every hour, data collected by the Health Ministry showed.
Iran on Saturday closed down most non-essential businesses in cities on red alert to slow the contagion, but health officials and the public have voiced concerns over the effectiveness of those measures.
Global coronavirus cases rose to 136.1 million on Sunday and death toll reached 2.94 million.
