Russia’s permanent representative to Vienna-based organizations underlined the failure of the United States’ maximum pressure against Iran after an analyst described it as Washington’s important leverage over Iran.
“Some people can’t draw lessons from the mistakes of the past. Do we need further evidence to recognize total failure of maximum pressure policy? Did ‘Pompeo’s 12 points’ materialize?” Mikhail Ulyanov said on Twitter.
The US imposed tough sanctions on Tehran after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, with then secretary of state Mike Pompeo making 12 demands in order to lift its so-called “maximum pressure campaign”.
Iran refused to give in and responded by scaling back its commitments in accordance with the provisions of the very deal.
In a recent opinion piece, the Arab News has claimed that sanctions have provided an important leverage for the new US President Joe Biden over Tehran.
“The arguments of opponents of the #JCPOA can’t be taken seriously,” Ulyanov said, using the abbreviation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action as the nuclear deal is formally called.
