Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations’ office in Geneva, Switzerland, stressed the need for “absolute political will” to help the Conference on Disarmament achieve its objectives and fulfill its duties.
Addressing a virtual meeting of the conference on Thursday, Esmaeil Baqaei-Hamaneh also stressed the need to strengthen the conference as the only multilateral forum for negotiating disarmament and arms control, IRNA reported.
“We need firm political will to assist the Conference on Disarmament to fulfill its negotiating tasks and resume its main duty, which is to create legally binding mechanisms,” he said.
He, however, regretted the lack of political will in certain delegations that want to downgrade the supreme assembly to a consultative body.
The Conference on Disarmament was recognized in 1978 as a single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of the international community.
The conference comprises 65 member states, including the five NPT nuclear-weapon states and 60 other states of military significance.
