Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has highlighted the need to protect the environment, urging relevant officials to prevent its destruction.
“The destruction of the environment is a great calamity that would ruin the future of mankind. Therefore, officials and all people must stand up to it,” he said on Friday, after planting two fruit tree saplings to mark the National Tree Planting Day (March 5), Leader.ir reported.
He pointed to incidents such as forest fires and the drying up of lakes and wetlands, saying they are preventable and the authorities who do not carry out their duties are accountable.
“Environmental activities are religious and revolutionary activities, and must not be viewed as luxurious or decorative,” he said, regretting the destruction of forests, natural habitats and aquifers by profiteers.
The Leader also referred to the coronavirus pandemic on the verge of the Norouz (Iranian New Year holidays), calling on the people to adhere to health protocols during the national celebrations.
“Whatever the coronavirus taskforce says must be followed. If they forbid travelling, people must not go on trips,” he said.
He also pointed to issues caused by the outbreak, saying people will face more livelihood problems if the deadly virus persists.
“Therefore, this disease should be defeated with collective cooperation,” he said.
Ayatollah Khamenei also said the economic issues and high prices have brought great sorrow on the eve of Norouz.
“Although goods are abundant in the market, prices are exorbitant and the profit does not even reach gardeners, but is reaped by brokers while people only suffer losses,” the Leader said.
“These issues all have a solution and it has been reminded on different occasions and the solutions worked out by experts have been shared with the authorities.”
