The Iranian president's chief of staff said on Friday that a new agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency is another proof that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program is pursuing peaceful purposes. manifest
Speaking to IRNA, Mahmoud Vaezi highlighted that Iran was a member state of IAEA and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty’s Safeguards Agreement, before the country signed the 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Under JCPOA, Iran agreed to voluntarily implement the Additional Protocol to the Safeguards Agreement. Following the United States’ exit and reimposition of sanctions, Iran began to row back its commitments, most recently suspending adherence to the protocol since Feb 23, as required by a parliamentary law.
However, Iran agreed to keep cameras rolling in its nuclear facilities for another three months while giving no access to IAEA unless all JCPOA parties comply with their obligations. Otherwise, Iran will erase all recorded videos forever.
“By this agreement, Iran tries to show to IAEA that the country is not going to pursue any kind of non-peaceful nuclear activity,” Vaezi said.
