Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran supports the formation of a government in neighboring Afghanistan, representing the people of all political groups and factions.
During a meeting with visiting Taliban’s top political leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and his delegation in Tehran on Sunday, Zarif said, “We support an inclusive government, which incorporates all ethnicities and religions, and consider it a necessity for Afghanistan,” IRNA reported.
“The people of Afghanistan are your people and should not be targeted in any operations,” he stressed.
The Iranian foreign minister pointed to US actions in Afghanistan, stating that Washington is not a good mediator and peace broker.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional issues, the situation in Afghanistan and how to advance the peace process in the country.
Baradar briefed Zarif on the process of intra-Afghan talks, expressing hope that the establishment of peace in the war-ravaged country would pave the way for further improvement of cooperation between Tehran and Kabul.
