Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei extended his condolences on the demise of Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, a senior cleric and member of the Assembly of Experts.
“Being in mourning myself for the loss of this old and dear brother of ours, I express my condolences to his esteemed family … to the pupils and admirers of that great teacher and to the [Qom] Islamic seminary,” he said in a message issued on Saturday, Leader.ir reported.
The Leader described the late cleric as “a prominent thinker” and “a competent manager”, whose passing was a grave loss for Islamic seminaries.
Ayatollah Mesbah-Yazdi passed away at the age of 85 at a hospital in Tehran on Friday evening due to a gastrointestinal disease.
He was an instructor in Qom Seminary and the founder of two religious institutes in the holy city.
The Leader led the funeral prayer on Saturday in his office’s open area before his body was transferred to Qom for burial.
Also on Saturday, President Hassan Rouhani and Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raeisi released messages of condolence on the passing of the top cleric.
