Iran recorded 153 overnight fatalities on Wednesday, its lowest daily death count since mid-September, as the third wave of infections subsided across the nation.
The newly reported deaths took the national toll past 54,150, the spokeswoman of Health Ministry, Sima Sadat Lari, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
“Some 6,200 tested positive for Covid-19 within 24 hours, taking the tally of cases to 1.177 million,” the health official said.
President Hassan Rouhani during his weekly Cabinet meeting reassured the public about Covid-19 vaccine imports, as many around the country voiced concerns about accessibility of the vaccines developed so far.
“The Central Bank of Iran and the Health Ministry are making their best efforts and have made plans. Covid-19 vaccines from domestic and foreign sources will be made available to the public,” the president said.
The top official pointed out that the locally-manufactured vaccine will most likely be ready in the next few months.
The local knowledge-based company, which has developed the coronavirus vaccine, will launch human trials in a few days. Volunteers will be injected with the vaccine twice, one month apart, to build immunity against the disease.
The research team behind the vaccine estimates that its mass production can begin by the end of spring 2021.
Around the world, more than 2.4 million people from six countries have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
According to Lari, 914,000 have recovered from the respiratory illness and 5,400 are admitted to intensive care units.
“Iran has performed over 7.2 million diagnostic tests since the virus was first spotted in the central city of Qom,” she said.
Nearly 78.4 million have contracted the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic over one year ago. The contagion has killed some 1.7 million worldwide.
