A Russian lawmaker commented that expansion of relations between Tehran and Moscow is of “strategic importance”.
In an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia on Friday, Leonid Kalashnikov, first deputy head of the State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, said the fact that Iran and Russia have common interests in various areas make it necessary for them to make efforts to boost bilateral ties, IRNA reported.
He added that western sanctions have prepared the ground for closer cooperation between the two countries.
On the proposal by the Russian-Iranian Council for Public Relations to Russian President Vladimir Putin to appoint a special envoy on Iran, the lawmaker said the move would be a “rational step”.
