Iran begins to enforce localized lockdown across the country on Saturday to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus, as cases and deaths continue to climb.
Some 13,260 were diagnosed with Covid-19 on Friday, taking the tally of cases to 828,000, the spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, Sima Sadat Lari, was quoted as saying by ISNA.
“In the past two hours, 479 coronavirus patients lost their lives, bringing the nation’s death toll to 43,896,” the health official said.
The government’s new scheme to contain the disease takes effect on Saturday, based on which travel to and from red cities are banned and non-essential occupations are closed.
The plan also entails a curfew from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. to reduce movement throughout the cities hit hardest by the pandemic.
“More than 589,000 have recovered from the respiratory illness and some 5,750 are in serious condition,” Lari said.
“Iran has administered over 5.7 million PCR tests since the start of the outbreak.”
Worldwide coronavirus cases climbed to 57.3 million, as death toll reached 1.36 million.
