US Fresh Sanctions a Political Gesture

The United States’ new sanctions against Iran only serve as a political gesture for domestic purposes while its toughest restrictive measures have already failed to produce the desired result, a senior government official said.
In an article published in the Persian newspaper Iran, President’s Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi pointed out that American sanctions were aimed at leading Iran’s economy toward total collapse so as to pit the nation against the establishment.
“Now that this objective has not been achieved, thanks to the Iranian nation’s resistance and the efforts of the government and other state bodies, the White House officials have resorted to dramatic gestures,” he wrote.
Washington imposed sweeping sanctions on Tehran following its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal two years ago. It has also been ratcheting up pressure on various grounds ever since.
In its latest move, the US treasury on Monday slapped fresh sanctions targeting the country’s oil sector, including the Iranian Oil Ministry.
The US, according to Vaezi, intended to bring the Iranian nation to its knees, but its failure is now known to the world.
“The Americans’ recent confession that there is no longer anything or anyone to sanction shows that they, themselves, do not consider their measures successful,” he said.
