Abdullah Abdullah Expected

Head of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah is set to arrive in Tehran on Sunday for talks with Iranian officials on latest developments related to the troubled Afghan peace process. 
Leading a delegation comprising members of the reconciliation council as well as Afghan Parliament and Foreign Ministry, Abdullah will meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other top-ranking officials during his three-day stay, ISNA reported. 
Afghanistan has been engaged in a civil war with the Taliban since the United States overthrew the insurgent group from power in 2001. 
In February, the US and Taliban signed a peace agreement in Doha, Qatar, based on which Washington agreed to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, and Taliban pledged to enter talks with the Afghan government.
US-brokered peace talks between the Afghanistan government and the Taliban finally opened in Doha on Sept. 12, where the two warring sides sat face-to-face for the first time. 
Nevertheless, the negotiations reached an impasse due to disagreements over a framework for talks, while violence between Taliban fighters and Afghan government forces continued even during the negotiations.
Washington accuses Iran of disrupting the peace process and has offered to meet with Iranian officials to discuss the Afghan issue. 
Iran rejects the allegations, maintaining that sustainable peace is only achievable through intra-Afghan negotiations without foreign intervention. 
Afghan lawmaker Jamal Fakouri Beheshti said Abdullah’s trip is promising and will provide a solution while Doha peace talks remain in a deadlock. 
Speaking to IRNA on Sunday, he stressed the importance of a national, regional and international consensus in achieving peace in Afghanistan. 
“If one link is missing, the success of the process will be at risk,” he said. 
“While there is national agreement to a great extent, an accord at regional and international level has not been achieved as expected and Afghans are beginning to doubt the US intentions for bringing sustainable peace to this country. 
The Afghan lawmaker said the US is trying to disregard Iran’s role in the process and this will cause serious damage to the outcome of the efforts, adding that Afghan officials are fully aware of Iran’s significance and are trying to win its support.
