Iran logged 210 overnight deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, which pushed the national toll past the 28,000 mark, a health official said.
“The daily count of infections dropped to 4,142, taking the tally of cases to 492,000,” Health Ministry’s Spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari was also quoted as saying by ISNA.
Both cases and deaths have set new records over the past two days, with fatalities reaching an all-time high of 239 and the number of daily infections rising to 4,392.
Restrictions imposed in Tehran Province, the region hit hardest by the outbreak, was extended for seven days after the partial shutdown of businesses over the past week did not slow transmission rates.
Starting Saturday, people need to wear facemasks when leaving home, Tehran’s Governor General Anoushirvan Mohseni Bandpey said.
The official did not specify the amount of penalty violators would have to pay.
Lari said some 4,400 patients are hospitalized in intensive care units in critical conditions and 401,000 have recovered from the infectious disease.
Over 4.25 diagnostic tests have been administered in Iran to identify infections.
Global coronavirus infections exceeded 36.8 million on Friday and deaths reached 1.06 million.
