Iraq’s top diplomat is in Tehran to discuss bilateral relations and latest developments in the Middle East with Iranian officials.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in the Iranian capital on Saturday for talks with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, and other officials, ISNA reported.
During his two-day visit, the top Iraqi diplomat will discuss the implementation of agreements reached earlier this year during the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to Tehran.
The Iraqi prime minister visited Iran on July 21 at the head of a politico-economic delegation at the invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
Kadhimi said at the time that his visit to Iran was aimed at fortifying “historical relations” between the two neighbors, adding that the defense of Iran is seen as rubric of Iraq’s regional policy.
He said Iraq’s foreign relations were “balanced”, stressing that Iraq would never let its soil be used as a launch-pad for any threat against “our friendly” neighbor.
