Iran on Monday registered its highest single-day rise in coronavirus infections in over three months with 3,341 new cases, second only to early June’s 3,500 when the second wave of the deadly outbreak peaked.
“Only days into the third wave of Covid-19 infections in Iran, the daily tally of cases jumped by 7%, compared to a day earlier, to push the national total to 425,481,” spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, Sima Sadat Lari, was quoted as saying by ISNA.
Some 177 were reported dead on Monday after contracting coronavirus, taking the death toll to 24,478, Lari said.
During an online speech paying tribute to war veterans, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei expressed grief at the daily death toll of 150 to 170 coronavirus patients.
The Leader said, “The solution to this devastating problem lies in the hands of the people,” and advised them to observe social distancing, wear facemasks and wash hands frequently.
Over 361,000 have recovered from the infectious disease and 3,912 are hospitalized in intensive care units.
Iran has administered 3.7 million diagnostic tests since the epidemic was first identified in the country.
