A member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Tuesday the committee has decided to take action in response to a recent incident in which Turkmen police opened fire on Iranian boatmen, who inadvertently entered Turkmen waters in the Caspian Sea, without issuing any prior warning.

“The action that the Turkmen police took in the recent clash with Iranian boatmen was in violation of diplomatic norms and protocols, and they should not have arrested or shot at them,” Lawmaker Mohammad Reza Mohseni Sani told ICANA.

Elsewhere, he said it is estimated that about 600 Iranian nationals are currently being held in Turkmen prisons in “appalling conditions”.

“The state of the Iranian prisoners in Turkmenistan has been examined and meetings have been held on their exchange,” he added.
