In a statement issued on Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham pointed to the Bahraini government’s decision to revoke the nationality of many citizens for allegedly damaging national security and expressed worry over the “intensified crackdown” on political opponents in the Persian Gulf kingdom and “the continued detention of political and religious figures,” IRNA reported. She also said, “The imposition of outdated punishments and the failure to distinguish between popular peaceful protests in the country and terrorist actions by takfiri groups will not help resolve the problems.”
