International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi is set to travel to Iran on Monday to discuss ongoing interaction and cooperation between Iran and the global body.
"Iran is one of the main partners of the Agency and we hope this visit will help reinforce mutual cooperation," Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's representative to the IAEA, said in a tweet on Saturday.
Grossi himself said his meetings with Iranian authorities will be centered on addressing outstanding questions related to nuclear safeguards in Iran.
"I hope to establish a fruitful and cooperative channel of direct dialogue. It is necessary," he said on Twitter.
According to NHK, Grossi is expected to ask for Tehran's cooperation over IAEA's inspections of two facilities where it suspects Iran had been storing undeclared nuclear material.
The UN nuclear watchdog's Board of Governors adopted a resolution in June calling on Iran to give inspectors access to the two sites. The resolution was proposed by Britain, France and Germany.
Iran has denied access to the sites, arguing that the request is based on inadmissible data provided by Israeli intelligence services.
The IAEA plans to release its updated report on Iran's nuclear program in early September, ahead of a Board of Governors meeting in the middle of the month. The Iranian issue is expected to be the main focus of the meeting.
