Iran reported an uptick in coronavirus cases and deaths on Monday, logging 2,132 infections and 189 deaths, according to data compiled by the Health Ministry.
Coronavirus infections broke a five-day streak of declining figures, registering 2,132 confirmed cases, up by 112 compared to a day earlier, taking the country’s nationwide total to 328,844, spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, Sima Sadat Lari, was quoted as saying by ISNA.
“Within a 24-hour period, 198 Covid-19 patients lost their lives and the death toll reached 18,616,” she added.
Iran has administered 2.7 million coronavirus tests to identify infected patients.
Lari said over 286,000 have either recovered or been discharged from hospitals and some 3,990 are hospitalized in ICU.
According to the health official, 15 of Iran’s 31 provinces are on red alert and 11 are in an alarming state. While the country has lifted nationwide lockdowns, red provinces have imposed localized restrictions to stem the spread of the pandemic.
Iran has also made facemask wearing and adherence to health protocols mandatory to counter the effects of large-scale reopenings that have ushered in a second wave of infections in the past two months.
Lari once again asked the public to refrain from non-essential travel and avoid attending any type of gathering, including weddings and wakes.
World’s Covid-19 cases crossed the 20 million mark on Monday and the death toll went past 735,000. At least 13 million have recovered from the infectious disease.
