The number of overnight confirmed coronavirus cases in Iran soared by nearly 3,000 on Monday, the highest single-day rise in two months.
Iran registered 2,979 infections in the past 24 hours, a health official said, only 200 short of its highest daily count in late March when the outbreak had peaked.
Officials have linked the surge to a more comprehensive approach to screening. The country’s caseload has crossed 154,400.
Overnight deaths from the respiratory illness also increased by 81, taking the death toll to 7,878. More than 121,000 have recovered or left hospitals. Some 2,500 are in serious condition.
Laboratories stationed across the country have carried out 955,865 diagnostic tests since the pandemic was detected in Iran.
Health Minister Saeed Namaki said on Monday that he is very concerned about public attitude toward the contagion.
Polls show a sharp drop in the number of people who take Covid-19 seriously.
