200 Iranians in Turkmen Prisons

An informed source, who asked not to be named, told IRNA on Sunday that over 200 Iranian nationals are being held in Turkmenistan’s prisons while their cases are pending.  “Unfortunately, there are reports that some Turkmen border and security officials mistreat Iranian nationals, especially the prisoners,” the source said, adding that officials, particularly those at the foreign ministry, are pursuing the matter and are in consultations with Turkmen officials to find a way to resolve the issue.
The governor of a border town in Golestan Province, which borders Turkmenistan, also told IRNA, “In view of the fact that such issues are sensitive, we try to settle them through holding talks with border officials of the neighboring country (Turkmenistan).”
