The number of people detected with the new Coronavirus in Iran has reached 28, according to the Health Ministry, with five having so far died of the disease that originated in central China.
Kianoush Jahanpour, the head of the ministry's Media Center, said 785 suspicious cases have undergone medical tests and 10 new cases were definitely diagnosed with the illness over Friday, increasing the total number of confirmed infected people to 28.
"Out of the 10 new diagnosed cases, eight were in the city of Qom and two have been referred from Qom for hospitalization in Tehran," Jahanpour was quoted as saying by IRNA.
He added that a majority of the infected people either live in Qom, or have visited the religious city over the past days or weeks.
From the previous 18 cases, 12 were identified in Qom, two in the northern province of Gilan and four in Tehran.
Jahanpour called on the public to avoid traveling to the involved cities, particularly to Qom, and follow health recommendations, including washing the hands regularly and refraining from shaking hands and hugging.
Since the outbreak, more than 75,000 people have been infected globally, with more than 2,000 reportedly dead, mostly in China.
