President Hassan Rouhani said Iran will never hold talks with the United States under pressure.
“Iran will never negotiate under pressure ... We will never yield to US pressure and we will not negotiate from a position of weakness. America’s ‘maximum pressure’ campaign against Iran will fail,” Rouhani said in a news conference on Sunday, President.ir reported.
Tensions have increased between Iran and the United States since 2018, when US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, and reimposed harsh sanctions against Iran, which have severely affected its economy.
The Trump administration wants a new deal that would impose permanent constraints on Iran’s nuclear program, end its ballistic missile program, curb its role in the Middle East and curtail its support for regional allies.
Tehran has rejected holding negotiations over a new deal, saying talks are possible only if the United States returns to the nuclear accord and lifts sanctions.
Rouhani also said Tehran’s role is essential to establish security in the Middle East.
“Securing peace and stability in the sensitive Middle East region and in the Persian Gulf is impossible without Iran’s help,” Rouhani declared.
