Oman’s Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi who is in Tehran as part of regular consultations between the two countries met his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on Tuesday.
The two diplomats underlined Tehran-Muscat’s close and strategic relations and exchanged views on latest developments in the region, IRNA reported.
Zarif and Bin Alawi have held several meetings over the past few weeks. They met on Friday in Muscat and during the Tehran Dialogue Forum in Tehran in early January.
The Iranian foreign minister had also attended the commemoration ceremony of the late Omani ruler, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, last week, following which he met the new king, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, and other high-ranking Omani officials.
Oman is among the regional Arab states that have maintained friendly relations with Iran.
It has a positive history of mediating between Iran and the United States to settle their disputes, including in negotiations that led to the landmark nuclear agreement in 2015, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
The current regular meetings between Iranian and Omani authorities take place against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, which took on a military aspect recently, with the two countries launching attacks against each other's interests in Iraq.
