Seasoned diplomat Gholamali Khoshroo was appointed as Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.

Khoshroo’s appointment came after the United States refused to issue a visa for Hamid Aboutalebi who was nominated as Iran’s ambassador to the UN last year, ISNA reported.

The US Congress put pressure on President Barack Obama not to allow Aboutalebi to enter the country because of his involvement in the seizure of the US embassy in 1979.

Khoshroo, who is a Ph.D. graduate in sociology from the United States, is currently Iran’s envoy to Switzerland.

He had previously served as ambassador to the UN and deputy foreign minister in the 80s and 90s.
