Palestinians Seek Full UN Membership

The Palestinian Authority is trying to upgrade its status at the United Nations from observer state to full state member, a Palestinian official said on Sunday. A member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Ahmad Majdalani, told the Anadolu Agency that the Palestinian Authority is holding consultations with members of the UN Security Council to secure a vote for a draft resolution to grant Palestine full state membership, Middle East Monitor reported. “The proposal will be submitted after completing consultations to secure sufficient support to submit the project, although we are aware that the US will veto it,” he added. Should America use its veto to block the move, Majdalani said “there is a second draft resolution in the Security Council, followed by a third and a fourth, until they are tired of us.” To secure full state membership at the international organization, the Palestinians need support from nine of the UN Security Council’s 15 members, provided that none of the five permanent member states use the power of veto.
