Roadside Bomb Kills 2 Policemen in Sinai

Two Egyptian policemen were killed in a roadside bomb blast late Saturday in the restive Sinai Peninsula, according to the country’s interior ministry. In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said the device struck a police convoy in the North Sinai city of Arish, Anadolu reported. Nine riot police personnel were also injured in the attack, the ministry said. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, which came one day after at least 25 soldiers were killed in a suicide bombing in the northern Sinai Peninsula on Friday. Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first freely-elected president, was ousted in a military coup. Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in attacks across the volatile region, especially in northeastern Sinai, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.
