Pope Francis on Sunday held a private audience with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner at the Vatican. The meeting between the Argentine pope and president was a lengthy one and lasted around an hour and forty minutes.

Following closed-door talks, Kirchner introduced her delegation to the pope and the two exchanged gifts. It was the fifth meeting between the pontiff and head of state since the ex-Buenos Aires archbishop was elected to the Holy See, Reuters reported.

On her brief visit to Rome, Kirchner was due to attend the 39th Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Monday to receive an award for argentine efforts to reduce hunger and later lunch with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

The pope was also due to hold talks with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro earlier on Sunday but Maduro was forced to cancel the visit after falling ill with flu.
