The Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted for the first time in almost half a century, forcing officials to evacuate residents from nearby towns.

The volcano - dormant for 42 years - roared to life Wednesday afternoon, spewing a huge cloud of ash before erupting for a second time less than 24 hours later. Despite forcing 5000 people to leave their homes, the eruptions created spectacular scenes. Chile is home to 90 active volcanoes, and has the second largest chain of volcanoes in the world after Indonesia, according to the Associated Press
