A series of bombings and mortar strikes in and near the Iraqi capital killed eight people on Friday as Baghdad police discovered six bodies with gunshot wounds, officials said.

In the capital’s southern district of Dora, mortar shells killed two people inside their homes early in the morning, and wounded four others, ABC News reported.

Bombs also targeted market places Friday, usually a shopping day for many Iraqis. In Baghdad’s western Sadiyah neighborhood, a bomb blast near a wholesale vegetable market killed three people. Another bomb went off near an outdoor market in the Sabaa al-Bour area, just north of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding eight.

Medical officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to journalists.

Meanwhile, six bodies with gunshot wounds to the head and chest were found in a northern Baghdad suburb. Dead bodies left in the street were a common occurrence during the widespread sectarian violence that engulfed Iraq several years ago.

Iraq sees near-daily attacks that are often claimed by the Islamic State group, which seized about a third of the country last year.
