A pod of more than 30 endangered Chinese white dolphins, affectionately nicknamed the "pandas of the sea", was filmed swimming in southern China earlier this week by a marine mammal research team. The sighting happened on August 6 off the coast of Dongfang, a city in southern China's island province of Hainan, by members of the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Xinhua reported. Speaking to Xinhua, the team's spokesperson said they had been tracking the pod since 2014 when it was first spotted in the waters off Sanya in the south of the province, and can currently identify 206 Chinese white dolphins within it. Threats of overfishing, water pollution and heavy marine traffic, along with coastal development, have all contributed to the drastic decline in the species' numbers.
