Iran's Department of Environment held an educational conference in Tehran on Monday focusing on the Caspian Sea. The conference was part of a wider intra-organizational training program and was meant to honor the Caspian Sea Day, which is celebrated on August 8 by the five littoral states, namely Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. "Environmental issues related to the Caspian Sea were discussed in DOE's training session, including the impact of climate change on the sea's aquatic environment and its consequent economic, social and other implications," head of the DOE's education department Abolqasem Mousavi was quoted as saying by IRNA. August 12 marks the day the first legally binding instrument signed by the Caspian littoral states, formally known as the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea or simply the Tehran Convention, went into force in 2006.
