DOE Striving to Contain Odor Along Tehran's Int'l Airport

Eliminating an unpleasant stench plaguing the road to Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport is high on the agenda of the Department of Environment's provincial office in Tehran.

The office, according to its director, Kiumars Kalantari, has identified 28 sources of pollution that contribute to the pungent smell. "They include slaughterhouses, animal farms, unlicensed waste incineration centers, Aradkouh garbage dump, urban waste sites and the stagnant water remaining in the dried-up Salour River," Kalantari told ISNA on Monday.

Odor from four of those sources has been completely removed, he said, adding that "the other polluting centers are moving toward developing infrastructures such as waste treatment systems and other equipment to cut the pollution, with some having made 80% to 90% progress."

"The construction of a waste processing facility at Mihan dairy factory is 80% complete and Panda Mihan treatment center has already been launched."

He said the polluting facilities have been warned of legal action if they fail to comply with the DOE's call for pollution control measures.

The Agriculture Ministry and Tehran Province's Water and Wastewater Company are cooperating with the DOE to fast-track a project to expand the sewage networks across the cities of Islamshahr, Vavan and Baharestan, which are located along the road to Imam Khomeini Airport.

"Fortunately, the Plan and Budget Organization has supplied the required funds, allowing for all the raw sewage from the region to be put through a treatment process," he added.
