Micro-grid training for women energy entrepreneurs from East Africa, organized by the UN Environment Program's Africa Office, Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa and other partners, will be conducted in Nairobi, Kenya, from April 4-13.
Over 25 women working as energy entrepreneurs are expected to participate in this training program. Other women entrepreneurs from Europe, including Italy, will also participate to boost south-south cooperation and share best practices.
The objective of this training is to enhance access to energy in rural communities and promote local enterprises and job creation. This will positively impact health and education services, women empowerment, environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
The workshop, to be held at the Kenya Power and Lighting Company facilities in Nairobi, will use the 20-40 kW micro-grid for hands-on training.
It will support managers and engineers to plan, design, build and operate grid-connected systems as well as hybrid mini-grids.
The event has been planned within the framework of the implementation of innovative environmental solutions, as recommended by the African Ministerial Conference on Environment.
The conference has called on regional countries to strengthen the technical and business skills of African women entrepreneurs in the energy sector.
Micro-Grid Academy, which will lead the initiative, is an East African capacity-building platform that aims to enhance access to energy and green jobs market through technical and entrepreneurial training programs. The platform focuses on decentralized renewable energy solutions.
UN Environment Program will convene a one-day meeting on April 10 to share best practices on renewable energy development among trainees, instructors and representatives of partners of Micro-Grid Academy.
