The volume of water flowing into Karoun, Karkheh and Maroun dams in the southwestern province of Khuzestan has declined by 31% during the first three months of the current Iranian water year (started Sept. 23, 2017), compared with the same period of last year. According to the latest report released by the Ministry of Energy, the amount of water estimated to have flown into the three dams is currently 1.6 million cubic meters, which shows a significant decline compared with last year's figure of 2.4 mcm. The sharpest fall in water inflow has been registered in Maroun Dam by 58% during the period, IRNA reported. The total amount of water feeding Khuzestan's 10 dams shrank by 17%, from 14.4 billion cubic meters to 11.6 bcm. Figures released by Iran Water Resources Management show that currently only 47% of Khuzestan water reservoirs are filled with water.
