Three Asiatic cheetahs have been sighted in Touran Biosphere Reserve in Shahroud, Semnan Province, early this week, a senior environmental official said.

Speaking to Mehr News Agency, Abbas-Ali Damangir, the head of the provincial office of the Department of Environment, said all sightings have been recorded by park rangers in the reserve's Delbar District.

"Since the beginning of the Persian month of Aban (Oct. 23), 14 sightings have been recorded in Touran, which is promising, given the endangered status of the species," Damangir said.

Providing security, expanding natural habitats and observing environmental standards in development plans could help preserve the vanishing species.

TBR is a suitable and major habitat for the endangered animal, which is threatened by drought, livestock grazing and illegal constructions.

Iran is home to the last known Asiatic cheetahs in the world.
