Tehran Bus Company has launched a pilot program for supplying biofuel to public transportation fleet for reducing the metropolitan city’s air pollution. Preliminary studies on the program started in 2015 and it eventually kicked off after TBC and Biotechnology Development Headquarters signed an agreement late last week on using biodiesel in Tehran’s bus fleet of 300 vehicles, Asre Khodro news website reported. According to Peyman Sanandaji, the head of TBC, 20 two-cabin buses are to be covered in the pilot program. “The program is expected to reduce the emission of half-burnt hydrocarbons in the air by 4%,” he said. Installing diesel particulate filters and distributing high quality fuel for Tehran’s bus fleet are among key measures to tackle air pollution in the sprawling capital. Sanandaji called on the ministries of oil and industries to collaborate on biodiesel production. Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil- or animal fat-based diesel fuel.
