Drone Use for Cheetah Census

Authorities are planning to use drones to accurately count Asiatic cheetahs in their habitat, according to Houman Jokar, head of the Asiatic Cheetah Conservation Project. The drones will be operated by rangers and will help keep track of cheetahs and their prey—the herbivores, IRNA reported. Due to the lack of a proper method to count cheetahs, rangers use their own methods to conduct cheetah census. Therefore, current statistics on the number of Asiatic cheetahs in the wild are unreliable. Drones have been tested in two regions so far, Jokar said. Despite its efficiency, the new technique has proven to be costly. Jokar said they are in touch with companies to reach a deal to make drone production and use more economical.
