Experts are left scratching their heads after thousands of dead fish washed ashore on the beaches of Kish Island, Hormozgan Province during the past few days, Mehr News Agency reported. The deaths were first attributed to an oil spill, but head of Kish Island’s DoE office Maryam Mohammadi rejects that notion. “Oil and petroleum products accumulate in one region. Since the dead fish are found all around the island,however, oil spill cannot be the cause.” Pollution is thought to have caused the deaths, according to Davud Mirshekar, director of the marine ecosystems office at the DoE. “Rotten remains of fishes largely contribute to the pollution.” There has been no monitoring on local fish deaths by the DoE so far. Since principles of sustainable development are being ignored, we have to expect similar incidents, he warned.
