Power Projects Expand in North, Northwest

A new small-scale power plant with distributed generation system joined the national grid in Anzali Free Zone, Gilan Province, the managing director of Gilan Regional Electric Company said.

“With a total capacity of 25 megawatts, the facility has started work with 16 MW and will be fully operational in the near future,” the Energy Ministry news portal Paven quoted Azim Bolbolabadi as saying.

The second plant with DG system in the province will provide power to the free zone and the extra generated electricity will be transferred to the provincial capital Rasht.

Located in north of Iran and south of Caspian Sea, Anzali Free Zone is covers 9,400 hectares and includes industrial, trade and commercial, tourism and services sections.

Distributed generation or on-site generation refers to electricity produced in small quantities near the point of use, as alternative or supplement to traditional centralized grid-connected power.

It reduces the cost and complexity associated with transmission and distribution, while helping offset peak electricity demand and stabile the local grid.

“Compared with large thermal power plants, this station (the DG system) is also more environmentally friendly,” Bolbolabadi noted.

Progress in Ardebil

Nine power distribution projects will be launched next week in the northwestern Ardebil Province, the managing director of Ardebil Electricity Distribution Company said.

“The projects cost over $2 million,” Hassan Mohammadi was quoted as saying by Paven.

They include expansion and renovation of rural and urban power networks, installing transmission towers, modern feeders and street lights in urban and rural regions, replacing copper cables with self-contained cables and installing smart meters.

Thanks to the projects, four villages and several industries will be connected to the national grid.
