Iran's Ambassador to Havana Kambiz Sheikh Hassani and Cuba’s Minister of Energy and Mines Raul Garcia Barreiro met Friday to explore expansion of bilateral energy ties between.
Sheikh Hassani referred to a recent meeting between the Iranian and Cuban presidents and their emphasis on building economic collaboration. “The energy sector has a significant potential for promoting economic relations,” the envoy said.
Pointing to the common economic challenges the two nations are facing due to the US sanctions, he said such threats also create the opportunity for independent countries to deepen ties, IRNA reported.
He announced Tehran’s readiness to cooperate with the Republic of Cuba in the field of power generation and production of machinery and equipment for electricity transmission.
In the meeting in Havana, the ambassador recalled the competence of Iranian companies in manufacturing electrical products and power transmission equipment and said Iran is ready to help meet the needs of the Latin American nation.
Barreiro acknowledged the stance of the ambassador with regard to the common challenges and the need for closer cooperation and expressed Cuba's interest in expanding collaboration in key economic sectors, namely in the energy and power sector.
President Hassan Rouhani met his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel on the sidelines of the 73rd annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York and said his government seeks expansion of relations with Havana. “The two countries should use capacities to build ties,” Rouhani told the Cuban leader.
"There is good cooperation between the two sides in various sectors, including pharmaceutical technology and vaccine production,” he noted, and emphasized that Iran wants to further develop relations with Cuba in economic, scientific and technological fields.
Diaz-Canel supported expansion of economic ties with Iran as a priority and called for effective measures to harness the joint potential in key economic, political and scientific arenas in the interest of the two friendly nations.
