POGC Opens Butane Storage Facility in South Pars

Pars Oil and Gas Company has launched butane storage tanks at phases 20 and 21 of the giant South Pars Gas Field in the Persian Gulf.

According to Alireza Ebadi, operator of the project, two propane storage tanks will come online by the end of November. This would be a major step toward completing the value chain of hydrocarbon products in the two phases, Shana, the Oil Ministry news agency reported.

Phases 20 and 21 were inaugurated in April and annually produce 1.1 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas besides other hydrocarbons.

The onshore facilities of the two phases are developed on the basis of supplying treated lean gas to the domestic network and ethane gas to petrochemical complexes, LPG (propane and butane) for export and condensate for both export and domestic use.

South Pars mega project is being developed in 24 phases. Except for Phase 11 that has not been developed yet,  phases 13, 22, 23 and 24 will become operational by the end of 2019.

Iran uses natural gas for heating purposes and as feedstock for thermal power stations that account for 80% of electricity generation. Gas is also injected into underground reservoirs to increase crude oil recovery.

South Pars is the world's largest gas field shared by Iran and the state of Qatar.
