Old Water Pipelines Near Tehran Will Be Replaced

By the end of the Sixth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2016-2021), 1,000 kilometers of dilapidated and rusted water pipelines in the suburbs of Tehran Province will be replaced to curb water loss in the rural network to below 30%, said the managing director of Rural Water and Sewage Company of Tehran Province.

Reza Pour-Rajab said almost half of the water network in the outlying areas is old and according to estimates the piping project should be completed in three years and cost $10 million, ILNA reported.

According to the official, since 2014 $18 million has been invested in the construction of water and wastewater facilities in the outskirts of Ray, Damavand, Varamin, Firuzkuh, Malard, Pardis, Lavasan, Shahriar and Rudehen counties among others.

“An estimated 354 wells provide 412 villages with water. Every day 3,000 liters per second of quality water that meets the standards of World Health Organization is supplied through wells to the surrounding regions,” he noted.

However, 43% of this water transferred through the water grid is wasted due largely to wear and tear of pipelines. “Of the 2,123 kilometers of pipes in the water distribution network in the villages of Tehran Province almost 1,000km must be replaced to reduce water loss below 30%.”
