Tehran, Bishkek Eager to Expand Energy Ties

Tehran and Bishkek have expressed willingness to strengthen energy ties.

In a meeting between Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and Kyrgyzstan's Ambassador to Tehran, Avaz Beig Abdarazakov, the two sides discussed ways of improving water and energy relations, IRNA reported on Tuesday.

According to Ardakanian, the presence of Iranian private and state enterprises in Kyrgyzstan can play a key role in promoting economic activities between the two countries.

Pointing to Tehran's readiness to form a joint economic committee with Bishkek, the minister called for making efforts to establish stronger ties with the neighboring state.

"Bishkek is all set to collaborate with Tehran on launching joint energy and water initiatives," Abdarazakov added, noting that his country is doing its best to expand economic ties with Tehran.

He highlighted President Hassan Rouhani’s “constructive visit” to Bishkek in December 2016, as a means of paving the way for developing bilateral bonds.

Iran and Kyrgyzstan have embarked on what seems to be a new era of bilateral relations due to rising interactions in various spheres.

The two countries have generally had friendly relations, as they have signed agreements on cooperation in the fields of transport, customs, trade and commerce. They also have interactions in the fields of education, culture, tourism and war on trafficking and crimes in general.

The two countries mainly trade in agriculture and capital goods.

Iranian companies participated in the construction of a highway connecting Bishkek and Osh, the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan.

Reportedly, Iranian firms exported $22 million worth of commodities to Kyrgyzstan during the last eight months, yet Iran's import from the country stood at $3 million.
